Briggs & Stratton Model, Type and Code Number LocationsFor most Briggs and Stratton engines, the model, type, and code numbers are located on the air shroud. The model number tells a mechanic many things about the engine; its displacement, whether it is a horizontal or vertical shaft, the type of starter, and other things. The type number tells things about the application for the engine such as the muffler type, fuel tank, and sometimes even the type of equipment the engine was installed on. The code is sort of a serial number. It also tells when the engine was built. For most of the engines in service today, the first two numbers of the code number are the last two digits of the year of manufacture. The table below gives information about engine model numbers.
